Southfield (WWJ) — A crime spree that stretched from Metro Detroit to Ohio and involved the suspects stealing garage door openers and GPS units has been busted.

Two men wanted for allegedly breaking into homes after stealing the garage door openers and GPS units from cars at movie theaters and restaurants were arrested by Pittsfield Township police in late November. Investigators say the suspects would use information programmed into the GPS unit or vehicle registrations to find the victims’ homes.

Troy police say the burglaries were reported in October and November. In one case a larceny from a car at Chuck-E-Cheese in Troy led to a home invasion in Royal Oak. On November 23rd, police say a larceny from an auto at the Troy Sports Center resulted in a burglary in Berkley.

Detectives were able to identify the suspects after Detroit police investigators reported suspicious activity at a pawn shop.

The 23-year old from Trenton and a 23-year old from Rockwood were caught allegedly breaking into a vehicle on November 25th.

Search warrants at the suspects’ homes turned up what police call a “substantial amount” of stolen property.

Police say the suspects may be responsible for crimes in Berkley, Clinton Township, Commerce Township, Dearborn Heights, Grosse Pointe, Livonia, Monroe County, New Haven, Pittsfield Township, Riverview, Royal Oak, Southgate, Trenton, Troy, West Bloomfield, Wixom, Woodhaven and Sylvania, Ohio.
